Further information on the background to the GHG quota can also be found in our blog post GHG quota in Austria at a glance.

The GHG quota is a government climate protection tool designed to promote CO₂ reductions in the transportation sector. For more information, see our blog post.

Unlike fossil fuels, electricity can also be generated sustainably. The emissions saved by electric vehicles (e.g., cars, trucks, or buses) can be certified as so-called GHG quotas and subsequently sold in bulk to companies subject to quota requirements.

As an owner of an electric vehicle, you can claim these savings annually and receive a bonus in return. By selling them, you benefit financially directly. You can find the two options we offer listed above.

Registration is available for the following vehicle classes:

  • Passenger cars and buses (vehicle class M)
  • Trucks (vehicle class N)
  • Two-track motor vehicles (vehicle class L)

You can find the vehicle class in line J of your registration certificate.

Your GHG quota depends on the period of your admission and is calculated aliquot for your period of admission.

No, with a plug-in hybrid you cannot claim the GHG quota via SMATRICS and carbonify at the moment.

In general, the person or company listed as the registered owner on the vehicle registration certificate is eligible to receive the GHG bonus.
For leased vehicles, this may be either you or your leasing company, depending on the terms of the lease agreement.
You can find out who is listed as the registered owner by checking fields C.1.1 and C.1.2 on your vehicle registration certificate.

Yes, this is possible. As long as you are listed as the vehicle owner on the registration certificate, you will receive the payment to your account and the Charge & Roam+ tariff free of charge for each registration certificate.

The following information is required for registration:

Vehicle details

  • Your electric vehicle’s registration certificate for unique identification

Personal details

  • Some basic contact information
  • Bank account information for the payment of the GHG bonus

This information is necessary to correctly calculate your GHG quota and subsequently pay you the bonus.

In this case, please notify our partner Carbonify immediately and without being asked about the deregistration of your electric vehicle (in accordance with Carbonify’s Terms and Conditions). You can update your registration details at any time in your user profile.

The GHG bonus is calculated on a pro-rata basis for the period of registration. If the vehicle is deregistered during the year, this may result in a pro-rata adjustment or a demand for repayment of the bonus already paid out. This ensures that the subsequent vehicle owner can also receive the pro-rata GHG bonus.

Yes, you can also choose to receive only the cash payment GHG bonus.
As part of our special offer, you will automatically receive the Charge & Roam+ plan for one year—meaning there will be no activation or monthly fees.
You decide for yourself whether you want to use the plan. If you don’t use it, you won’t incur any costs or obligations.

For you as an e-mobilist, it can also be an advantage in many situations to have access to the nationwide high-power charging network of SMATRIC EnBW.

Greenwashing refers to the attempt by companies or systems to portray themselves as more environmentally friendly than they actually are, without any genuine ecological impact.
From our perspective, however, the GHG quota represents a sensible measure to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and propulsion systems. This will reduce the high environmental impact of road traffic in the long term, and the capital flows generated by the sale of quotas to companies will promote the further development of sustainable technologies.
In addition, the greenhouse gas emission reduction obligations for distributors of fossil fuels increase annually. Over 50% of these reduction targets must be achieved through their own efforts.
In summary: No, in our view, the GHG quota is not greenwashing, but a market-based instrument for the actual reduction of emissions.
