IAA Transportation: SMATRICS Embraces an Open E-Logistics Ecosystem
From charging points to charging availability: At the IAA Transportation in Hanover this week, SMATRICS is demonstrating how an open and interoperable e-logistics ecosystem accelerates the transition to e-mobility in heavy-duty transport.
Austria serves as a central energy and charging hub along Europe’s key north-south and east-west corridors—which underscores the importance of cross-border, reliably available, and efficiently usable charging services. To this end, SMATRICS brings together open interfaces, real-world charging infrastructure, and strong partnerships.
“When it comes to charging electric trucks, cost-effectiveness, time, and predictability are what matter most. That’s why we want to ensure as much charging availability as possible using the existing infrastructure. The key to this is an open e-logistics ecosystem in which infrastructure is shared, intelligently networked, and utilized to its full potential,” emphasizes Hauke Hinrichs, CEO of SMATRICS.
With this “depot-first” approach to logistics, its 360-degree services, and the Depot Club launched this year, SMATRICS fosters connectivity rather than dependency: The Depot Club plays a central role; it is a continuously growing network that specifically connects logistics companies with one another. E-charging depot owners can open up available charging slots for authorized members, thereby making better use of their infrastructure, while electric truck fleets gain predictable charging options at favorable rates along their routes. It currently comprises eleven locations in Austria and Germany.
SMATRICS focuses on ensuring the availability and optimal utilization of the charging infrastructure by allowing authorized third parties to use it when the depot is open: Open standards and interoperable solutions thus enable depot sharing. As e-logistics continues to ramp up, Sharing-as-a-Service will become increasingly important and can counteract the mindset of enclosed charging networks. Looking ahead, this also promotes the integration of energy management with battery and storage solutions and reduces barriers to entry for logistics companies. The goal is to create greater range, better predictability, and more flexibility for logistics providers—and thus a future-proof, cross-border e-logistics system.
