From gas station to mobility hub: SMATRICS and ORLEN AUSTRIA strengthen partnership

The mobility transition requires new alliances – between gas station operators, energy companies, and technology service providers. The partnership between charging infrastructure operator SMATRICS and energy and gas station company ORLEN Austria shows how e-mobility can become uncomplicated and suitable for everyday use.

ORLEN Austria and SMATRICS have been working together successfully since 2018 as pioneers in the transformation of existing gas stations into modern mobility hubs. ORLEN Austria relies on the many years of expertise of SMATRICS, which is responsible for the smooth operation of the charging infrastructure. Today, more than 130 public charging points are already in operation at around 40 gas station locations throughout Austria – powered by SMATRICS as a white label solution.

"At SMATRICS, we offer an all-inclusive package – from hardware to operation, maintenance and billing via various payment systems, including charging cards and direct payment terminals. And for smart and reliable energy provision, innovative load management is crucial as demand increases. To this end, SMATRICS provides its specially developed modular smart charging solution LOCI," explains Hauke Hinrichs, CEO of SMATRICS.

A holistic approach to mobility

With almost 231,000 registered electric vehicles in Austria and growth of over four percent in June alone, the infrastructure needs to keep evolving. Studies show that by 2040, we'll see a 50:50 mix of combustion engines and electric cars – clear proof that existing gas stations need to transform.

“By entering the electric mobility market, we have opened up a new customer segment and, in turn, offer new and existing customers an expanded product range. To achieve this, we are not thinking in terms of individual components, but want to strengthen the gas station as an overall energy concept – for all types of drive systems, today and tomorrow,” says Matthias Damberger, Head of E-Mobility at ORLEN Austria.

ORLEN Austria is therefore investing specifically in the entire gas station infrastructure. In addition to traditional refueling, the company currently offers ultra-fast chargers with up to 400 kW, 50 photovoltaic systems, partnerships with Spar Express and Nah & Frisch for food supplies, and state-of-the-art car washes.

Convenience as the key to acceptance

In order to provide the best possible support for the transition from refueling to charging for all user groups, SMATRICS and ORLEN Austria have further expanded their partnership and added a charging function to the AUSTROCARD. Since May 2024, the mobility card – powered by SMATRICS – can also be used by electric vehicle owners. This makes it possible to charge electric vehicles at Turmstrom charging stations and at more than 20,000 public charging points throughout Austria – and, since August 1, 2025, at numerous public charging stations in Germany as well.

The partnership between SMATRICS and ORLEN Austria is a prime example of how existing infrastructure can be intelligently rethought. For greater everyday usability, more sustainability, and future-proof mobility.
